Being a journalism major and writing and rhetoric minor, I've come to the realization that the two go hand in hand. You can't have one without the other. As a journalist, it is my duty to seek the truth and report it to my community. But if I'm not able to use rhetoric to my benefit, my audience will never listen. It's important for journalists, and writers of all genres, to understand rhetoric because if they use it correctly - it can change their entire writing process.
Rhetoric has the power to change the way we write and who we are writing to, and it has the power to change our message.
My pieces below show my future employers, aspiring writers, and fellow peers that I have the ability to write creatively. When I am writing an article for a news publication it's important that I have good sources, and that my facts are correct. But it is also important that my writing is creative, fluid and entertaining for my audience. My goal is to attract my reader in the first sentence, and keep them hooked throughout the story.

Creative Writing
In the summer of 2016, I took a creative writing class for my writing and rhetoric minor. I have also loved creative writing since I was a little girl. My professor asked our class to write a piece that was close to our heart, and I immediately knew what I wanted to write about. Earlier this year I lost my grandfather; my Pop Pop; my best friend.
This is my favorite creative writing piece, but it was hard for me to write. I'm including this piece in my portfolio because it shows my future employers and fellow writers that I can write creatively., and I can write more than just news. I think this piece shows that I am able to bring out emotions and tell a story fluidly when I write. It's important for a journalist to write creatively because it sets a scene for our audience, draws them in and keeps them entertained.
I hope you enjoy my piece, "I Never Got to Say Goodbye."

Telling a Story
It's important for all writers to have the ability to tell a compelling story. A good storyteller has the ability to bring their readers back to the scene they're describing. A good storyteller uses vivid details and imagery to set the scene. In this piece, I bring my readers back to the day I went to a music festival in NYC - but this wasn't your average day at a concert. I bring my readers back with me when I talk about that day in NYC.
After reading this piece my future employers and fellow peers will be able to see that I have a good sense of imagery, and I'm able to use vivid details to enhance my story. I really enjoyed writing this piece.
I hope you enjoy, "Waterlogged, Distraught and Covered in Mud."
