When I was a little girl I would always carry around a notepad, pen and my grandfather's antique camera, pretending I was an investigative journalist, saving the world one story at a time. While other kids played outside or with their toys for fun, I preferred writing stories. I loved the way I felt when my pencil hit the paper and the thoughts just flowed from my brain. I could write for hours and enjoy every second of it.
In elementary school I always struggled in math or science classes, but when it came to reading and writing I would excel past the other students. Throughout my whole high school career I was placed in English honor's classes. When I got to college, I knew I wanted to major in something that would allow me to express myself through writing. In my ENC 1102 class I received an assignment to pose as a magazine writer and write an investigative piece, covering a topic that was interesting to us. After that assignment I knew that I wanted to be writing stories like that for the rest of my life, which has lead me to major in journalism.
I chose writing and rhetoric as my minor because I knew it would help me grow as a writer. I believe that I am a quality writer, but with the help of my writing and rhetoric minor, I have the potential to become a exceptional writer and journalist. I believe a good writer is someone who can express their thoughts and feelings in vivid detail, keeps the audience interested and knows how to use rhetoric to their fullest potential.
A very common saying is, "if you love your job, you will never have to work a day in your life." I strongly believe that journalism is the right path for me and hopefully one day I will be a well known, accredited journalist. Having writing and rhetoric as my minor will strongly benefit me and teach me techniques and strategies on how to become a skilled rhetor, which will enhance my career in journalism.
